Microchip Pet Identification
|
- We highly recommend that every pet receive a microchip. This small device is easily placed and can be very successful in reuniting lost pets with their families. The small microchip is usually effective for the life of your pet, and has an identification number attached to it that cannot be altered.
- A needle is used to place the device between the shoulders, where it will sit quietly for the life of your pet. This process can be done at any age and is no more painful than your pet's standard vaccinations.
- When an animal is found, a special scanner is used to send a safe radio signal through the skin to obtain the identification number. Once this information is retrieved, the veterinarian or shelter can call the microchip manufacturer to determine the registration of the microchip. The owner is contacted and informed that their pet has been found. Most local veterinarians and shelters routinely scan all lost animals for microchips.
- All of the microchips we implant are registered with University Veterinary Hospital & Diagnostic Center; therefore if your pet goes missing we will be contacted and in turn will contact you. This is one reason why it is so important that you help us keep your contact information current, even if you are no longer living in the area. We recommend that identification tags be used along with microchips, for added safety.
